Nine weeks of the TEC Register

The weekly editions report what moved each week. This page keeps the running account since 25 August 2026: where the register level has gone, what has left and joined, how fast Gate 2 labels are filling, how project status has shifted, and where the queue sits by connection year. Each edition’s full detail is on the Trackers page.

Left includes Gastard BESS (200 MW) and Lambeeth 240MW (240 MW). Both were missing from the 5 October file only and are back on the register unchanged.

Register level

Measured

Sum of every row on NESO’s file, each Tuesday-paired edition.

The 3.6 GW step in mid-September is the two Alverdiscott interconnector rows moving to NESO’s Interconnector Register, confirmed by NESO as a data correction (ref 00125909). It is shown as a transfer, not a departure. The 12.3 GW rise on 13 October is mostly 29 projects joining (11.1 GW). On that file the level I publish and the control built from the register’s own project totals sit 1.368 GW apart, because NESO changed how it records two staged projects; Edition 7 sets out why. That double count, Immingham’s 1,268 MW, was gone by 16 October, which is most of the 0.5 GW fall to 20 October; take it out and real capacity rose 0.8 GW that week (Edition 8).

What left and what joined

Measured

Projects present in one edition and absent from the next. A project leaving the register is recorded as a departure; the register does not say why.

The four arrivals before October were batteries under 50 MW, already built, held by Care Power companies and newly entered under embedded (BEGA) agreements. The 13 October arrivals are different: 25 of the 29 came in already carrying a Gate 1 label. Nothing left the register in the week to 20 October.

How fast Gate 2 labels are filling

Measured

The register’s Gate field fills only when an agreement is countersigned, so this is a countersignature count, not an offers count.

Projects are counted by Project ID with any row labelled Gate 2; capacity is the MW on those rows. On 22 October the whole series was restated to this basis, which is the one the weekly editions use; the earlier chart counted each project’s full capacity (24.0 GW on 20 October on that basis). Just under six projects a week since 25 August, about 1.1 GW, with 19 in the week to 20 October alone. For scale only: NESO and the DNOs had issued Gate 2 offers to 713 projects (37 GW) by 10 June 2026. That figure covers distribution offers the TEC Register does not carry, so the two should not be read as a ratio.

How project status has shifted

Measured

Projects by NESO’s Project Status field, 25 August against 20 October. Each project is counted once, by Project Number, at its most advanced stage.

Most of the movement arrived in one file, 21 September, when 85 projects left Scoping. That looks like a status refresh by NESO; the weeks either side barely moved. Scoping rose again on 13 October as new projects joined.

Where the queue sits by connection year

Derived

Capacity not yet built, by the year in each row’s MW Effective From date. Grey marks 25 August; orange is 20 October.

Two peaks, 2033 and 2037, hold 178 GW between them. The near years are thinning: 2026 and 2027 together are down 3.2 GW in eight weeks.

How this page is built

  • Source: NESO TEC Register files, as published. Comparisons run Tuesday edition to Tuesday edition.
  • Level is the sum of every row (MW Connected plus MW Increase / Decrease), the basis I publish. Projects are counted once by Project Number; a project with rows at different stages is counted at its most advanced stage.
  • Gate 2 counts Project IDs with any row labelled Gate 2, and capacity is the MW on those rows. Status and Gate 2 series restated to these bases on 22 October 2026.
  • “Measured” is read straight from the files. “Derived” involves a grouping or a choice of date field.
  • Departures are never described as withdrawals. TEC and embedded registers are never added together.
  • Cumulative connection-date movement is not shown here; it is reported in each edition.
  • Updated with each Wednesday tracker edition.
